Forest exploitation areas on Velebit
Aleksandar Gospić, Zadar
Valley Jandrina poljana - Kajino Mirilo - Dalmatinska vrata is one of last locations of primordial wilderness of Velebit and one of last resorts of virgin beech forest! Nameless valley is stretching between Jandrine poljane, on the continental edge of Velebit, which is placed between Trošeljev Vrh on the west and Visočice on the east, and Dalmatinska vrata, a pass placed at the edge of seaboard side of Velebit, which is placed between nameless peak on the west and Veliko ploče on the east. Valley is around 3km long. Kajino Mirilo pass splits it in two equal parts. From Jandrina Poljana, which has been reached by 15km long forest road from Rizvanuša village in Lika, two new roads have been marked on terrain on both sides of the valley! Thousands upon thousands of beech trees are marked to be cut! Road on the western side of the valley is marked till Kajino Mirilo and leads from Jandrina Poljana using the route of Stap – Jandrina Poljana mountaineering path. Road on the eastern side leads from first before the last serpentine of the existing road (15,3 km) in the southern direction along the slopes of Šiljak. Date when work is going to begin is unknown but it can be at anytime!

Appeal to save Velebit
Aleksandar Gospić, Zadar
In the May of 1981, Croatian Parliament reached the decision by which whole Velebit was declared a Nature Park. In now distant 1949 Paklenica National Park and in recent 1999 North Velebit National Park were declared. Great, the government has ensured that future generations will be able to experience primordial beauty of Velebit. Unfortunately, the situation is quite different; Velebit has never been more endangered! Today, in the third millennium, after thousands of years of evolution and acquired knowledge about the planet we live on, we are supposed to be smarter, but unfortunately we are not. We live in the world in which the term ‘untouched nature’ itself has become endangered. Velebit is a treasure of a priceless value which was committed to us as people who had inhabited this part of the world. And how Velebit is treated by those that should care, is shameful! It is now clear that future generations won’t be able to see, experience and admire primordial Velebit. And frankly, we already can’t experience such Velebit when comparing it with the generation of pioneers like Kitaibel, Degen, Kušan, Gojtan, Poljak, Simonović or Premužić, who began the discovering of Velebit over a hundred years ago.

Why To Love And To Save The Velebit
Paolo Pezzolato, Italy
Beloved Croat friends, for many years I am your guest as quality mountain climber and hiker. I have always tried to respect your mountains and your Nation, not like a normal tourist but like a sincere friend. For this I beg you not to destroy the Velebit with new roads or hotels because You Croatians possess the last natural paradise in Europe! Velebit is inestimable treasury for you, your children and the future generations! Don't think at immediate profits because then nothing remains, only the desert! It is as to use the electric saw in order to take the fruits from the tree instead using the stair. It is taken all to fast but what remains the year after? No tree, no fruits but only hunger! Please don't make the same errors made in Europe and Italy. There are already too many roads and therefore little forests! I am not so presumptuous to want to teach you what to do but only want you to remember how beautiful your country is and to love it!

How I Fell In Love With Velebit
Jiří Schmied - Jura, Prague, the Czech Republic
To be frank, the German films about Winnetou from the sixties of the last century have done most for the publicity of the Croatian natural beauties. The same was with me. I always wanted to visit such wonderful places like Plitvice, Zrmanja, Vrlika, Skradin, Gorski kotar, Kapela and most of all – Velebit. During my first visit to Croatia in 1986. I saw Velebit for the first time. I was literally astonished by the beauty and scent of the nature in the canyon of Velika Paklenica and its vicinity. For the second time I visited Croatia no soon than in 1994. and only Istra and the island Lošinj from which I watched distant Velebit on the horizon with my binoculars every day. The third visit to Croatia in 1996. meant already only Velebit for me. I arrived with my family to the Adriatic see at the Velebit vicinity to be as close to Velebit as possible. Nowadays, with some exception, I am coming here every year. It is like a drug for me.

For Velebit mountain !
dipl.ing. Edo Hadžiselimović, Velebit News editor
Croatian mountain Velebit belongs to one of those inexpressible gifts of nature that a few Old and New Continent countries can pride themselves on. From ancient Albium to Venetian Montagna de Morlacha, the mighty Velebit gorges represented a border between worlds. For ancient Illyrian tribes, settled mountain dwellers and brigands celebrated in songs, as well as contemporary people from Lika and Podgorje, Velebit presents a mythical mountain, a refuge and food provider, a symbol of Croatian existence and national pride. When Velebit is mentioned to mountaineers, their eyes sparkle and bosom trembles, and the scenes of unforgettable origin urge them to irresistible embrace of Vila Velebita (the Fairy of Velebit) realm again and again.
